Recap the learning from the last session. Maybe look at some of the entries children made in the learning log. Check understanding and ability to use the skills listed above –initially with a demonstration of thumbs up for confident, thumbs down for no idea and in between for in between.
Demonstrate some of the skills most children are unfamiliar with using the Research Skills table. Invite children who think they are confident to check it out by demonstrating to the class.
Last session we compared using two search engines designed for children with one designed for adults. This time the children need to use their learning from last time and decide which search engine is best for them to research the topic chosen for the class (e.g. Viking Life?)
Download the Bibliography Sheet and print it off one per child or pair if children are collaborating. Less able children will need a mentor/coach.
Explain what a bibliography is and that instead of books we are collecting a list of USEFUL websites. Demonstrate the sorts of things that could be written in each box of the table.
URL = the address of the webpage. This can be too long to write out so just accept the site address e.g. this page would be sites.google.com rather than https://sites.google.com/sjsapps.co.uk/computing/year-5-internet-use/teachers-notes-2
At the end of the session, share some of the sites and thoughts the children have recorded and discuss :
reliability of the information
suitability for children their age
how useful the information is to them in understanding the topic.
