Recap the learning from the last session. Maybe look at some of the entries children made in the learning log. Check understanding and ability to use the skills listed above –initially with a demonstration of thumbs up for confident, thumbs down for no idea and in between for in between.
Demonstrate some of the skills most children are unfamiliar with using the Research Skills table. Invite children who think they are confident to check it out by demonstrating to the class.
Search Engines
· Google isn’t the only search engine you can use. They work in slightly different ways so often come up with slightly different results.
· You are not allowed to use Google, what other engines are there? E.g. -
Yahoo
Bing
Duck Duck Go
Ecosia
Google maps https://www.google.co.uk/maps
· Sometimes searches bring up texts that are too hard to read –Wikipedia for example has a Simple English Version https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
Search Engine Challenge
· Split the class into groups to each use a different method of searching
· Agree what you are going to each put into the search box e.g. “Mississippi” compare what you get when you search for:
o Mississippi for kids
o Mississippi for children
· Record useful jot down facts you find.
· As a class read out some facts that children have found and see if they all agree. Did different sites give different figures for the same thing? Why? Which is right?
· Demo Google maps, Tag Galaxy and EyePLorer on the board. What can we learn from each of these?
Plenary
· Tell someone nearby something you have discovered or learnt in this lesson.
· Pick on some children to report back to the class.
