Students will be given four written words and be asked to identify which of those words is being dictated by the teacher. The assessment will focus on the sound-spellings we practiced throughout the unit: the different spellings for the long vowel 'a' ('a', 'ai', 'ay', 'a_e'), 'i' ('i', 'i_e', 'ie'), 'o' ('o', 'oa', 'oe', 'o_e'), and 'u' ('u', 'u_e', 'ue'). There will also be a few /aw/ > 'aw' vs. 'au' spellings.
Students will read a decodable short passage and answer comprehension questions, both multiple choice & written.
There will be 5 parts in this section. first, they will need to generate a proper noun for a common noun. Second, they will need to identify 6 words as either a noun or verb. Third, they will need to look at a list of words and underline the verbs. Fourth, they will need to identify the correct spelling for plural nouns ('-s' vs '-es'). Lastly, they will need to decide if a given noun is singular or plural.
PDF of the Pausing point activites, all of which cover either sound spellings, reading comprehension, or grammar. Students have these pages in their activity books, but here is a digital copy as well.
