Welcome to 2nd Grade! I am so excited to get to know all of you, learn with you, and journey with you as you prepare to receive your First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. This is truly going to be an exciting year!
This school year, we will use the Sadlier Math Curriculum to explore addition and subtraction strategies, models, and lots of word problems, preparing for multiplication and division coming in 3rd grade. Then, we will work through measurements, place value, money, graphs, even and odd numbers, and basic geometry before finishing off the year with an introduction to the core concepts of fractions.
In ELA we will continue to use CKLA. In the skills curriculum you can look forward to discovering more coding skills, parts of speech, and grammar rules. We will also use the plan, draft, edit, revise method to write a narrative book report, personal narrative, persuasive writing, narrative end, and informational text report. In the knowledge curriculum, we will read fairy tales, fables, and ancient Greek myths as we explore early Asian cultures and Ancient Greece. We will continue American history from the end of the Revolution through the War of 1812, the Civil War, and westward expansion. We will also learn about some of the heroes of the Civil Rights movement, women's suffrage, and other world leaders. Then we will read about our planet, the seasons, plants, and life cycles, as well as the human body.
In social studies, we will build on our reading of Asia, Greece, and American history, but we'll add some Louisiana history, culture, and current events.
In science, we will be expanding on our ELA reading with inquiry-based discovery and demonstrations. We will also explore matter and its properties, energy, life cycles, the Earth's rotation and seasons, the water cycle, insects, and the human body.
The most exciting thing happening this year, though, is preparation to receive TWO sacraments for the first time: your First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. We will be preparing through studying Scripture, the Catechism, going to Mass, and spending time with our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. This will truly be a year filled with the love and wisdom of the Holy Spirit.
I am so incredibly excited to journey with you through this year. It's going to be amazing!
Love,
Mrs. Ralphs
