Students should be able to identify the proper use of the following vocabulary words:
conquest - taking over another land in order to make your kingdom bigger
messenger - someone who passes a message from one person to another
invader - a person who comes into another kingdom in order to take them over
Spartan - figure of speech used for when people don't live luxuriously
democracy- form of government where the citizens get to pick the leaders
contributions - something good a past civilization created or started that is still used or seen today
Marathon - a long foot race named after the city that was attacked by the Persians
Philosopher - someone who studies life, knowledge, and truth, usually by asking questions
architecture - style of buildings
City-state - a single city that has its own independent government
channel - a small body of water between two large pieces of land
independently - doing something on your own, without help
marvelous - excellent; wonderful; done extremely well.
prefer - liking one thing over another
tame - training a wild animal to obey commands
Students should be able to recognize the significance of the following terms:
Parthenon - Ancient Greek Architecture: temple of Athena in Athens
Zeus - king of gods, god of lightning
Athena - goddess of wisdom and war, Athens is named after her
Hermes - messenger god and son of Zeus
Alexander the Great - great conquerer of Ancient Macedonia and Greece
Aristotle - philosopher that defined many scientific terms by asking questions and making observations
Socrates - philosopher that believed in doing good and living a simple life
Marathon - city-state that was threatened by the Persians and where a famous runner had to run back and forth to warn the Athenians. Now there's a race named after it.
Mount Olympus - where the gods live
Olympic games - initially in honor of Zeus, they are now a major contribution of the ancient Greeks
Sparta - city-state in Greece that focused on military strength
Athens - city-state in Greece that focused on philosophy and arts, the birthplace of democracy
Students should know that the Persians lost the battles of Marathon and Thermopylae because the Greek city-states worked together.
Students will briefly explain in writing the following topics (one to two sentences):
Choose a Greek god or goddess and write two facts about them.
Identify one contribution the Greeks made to the world and describe it briefly.
Which person that we learned about (gods, godesses, philosophers, Alexander the Great, the Marathon Runner, etc.) would you like to meet?
How are Sparta and Athens different?
