ReThink Trash

Food and Trash has always been an integral part of our human society. It is of great importance for all of us to understand and deal with them in a sustainable fashion.

We have been tasked as a class of industrial designers to improve our school's current waste management system and to create better ones. Each designer team (max. 3 students) is going to create a presentation display board that consists the following components:

Part 1. Raise awareness (realizing the problem)

  • do some research on our current food/trash system

  • how are we doing as a school, a city, a province, a country or a planet?

  • what are some of the negative impacts/consequences of our current habits/actions

  • use graphics and statistics to present your findings

Part 2. Present a solution (solving the problem)

  • what can we do to make our school cleaner and our waste management more sustainable?

  • minimize trash

  • keep food scrap and recycling out of trash

  • quick and easy implementations that we can start right now

Part 3. Imagine The future

  • design a modular waste collection system that can make waste collection more functional (ie. more convenient, easier to use and identify, easier to sort and dispose, etc. )

  • design the product with functional forms, and "No Robots".

  • make a model of that product in Sketchup and print it out

  • include it as part of your presentation

Example of how you could present your concept design

http://www.slideshare.net/saamey/industrial-design-portfolio-7623615

Please include the following 3 components to you concept design display:

Pt1. The evolution of your design from ideation to the current model.

eg

Pt2. A 3D rendering of you current model, exported from Sketchup. (Please show and label models from different angles and close-ups to present all the details)

eg

Pt3. Explanation of your concept design (should include but not limited to the following, these can be interwoven with the above 2 parts or stand on its own)

  • What is its function?

  • Why you've chosen its form (reasons for its shape, colours, configurations, etc.)

  • How does it work?

  • How does your product meet a certain need or solve a problem.

  • Who is the product intended for?

  • Materials used...

  • Dimensions (ie, height, width, depth, angles, may use Sketchup to help you)
