Why Would People Want to Visit Greece?

The mere mention of Greece conjures up images of ancient ruins; archaeological sites are indeed among the Mediterranean country's top draws. Greece consists of the mainland, the Peloponnese peninsula and more than 6,000 islands; only 227 of these islands are inhabited. The country is also conducive to faith-based travel and recreation.

Archaeology

A obligatory stop in Athens -- the Greek capital -- is the famous Parthenon; it is part of the Acropolis archaeological site. Another must-see is Olympia, located on the Peloponnese peninsula; this is where the Olympic Games began. View the original Olympic stadium, as well as temples to the gods Zeus and Hera. The most important building at the archaeological site of Delphi is the temple to the god Apollo. Apollo was born on the tiny island of Delos -- in the Cyclades archipelago -- according to Greek mythology. Delos is home to another set of impressive ruins. The best archaeological museums in Greece -- according to Frommer's -- are the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki and the Archaeological Museum of Iraklion on the island of Crete.

Religious Tourism

Only men with proper permits are allowed at Mount Athos. This has been an important site in Eastern Orthodox Christianity since the 11th century; it encompasses 20 active monasteries. Both sexes are allowed to visit the six of the 11th-century monasteries. These structures are built into the Meteora peaks, and are accessible via steep steps carved from the rocks. Other important monastic communities include Daphni, Hosios Loukas and Nea Moni. Christians and history buffs often explore sites where St. Paul famously preached. One of these is Thessaloniki, which boasts the world's finest Byzantine churches. The Cave of the Apocalypse is found on the island of Patmos. This is where St. John the Divine is said to have penned the Book of Revelations. The Cave is open to visitors.

Beaches

Greece offers nearly 1,000 miles of coastline. Arvanitia -- on the Peloponnese -- is one of Greece's best beaches. Lalaria Beach -- on the island of Skiathos -- is a white-pebble stretch that features natural arches cut out from limestone cliffs. Paradise Beach -- on the island of Mykonos -- is known for its nightlife. The Perissa, Agios Georgios and Perivolos beaches -- on the southeastern coast of Santorini -- are conducive to windsurfing and jet skiing.

Gastronomy

Greece -- the world's largest exporter of extra-virgin olive oil -- is synonymous with this staple ingredient. A visit to Greece also affords cheese connoisseurs the opportunity to sample local varieties. These include feta, and the less common mizithra, kefalotyri and graviera. Wine lovers enjoy red wines from Naoussa and Nemea. The white wines from Santorini are considered the best in the country. The spiciest cuisine in Greece is found in Thessaloniki, where mussels with pilaf is popular dish among locals. The island of Sifnos is known for its chickpea soup. The most exquisite eggplant dishes in the country are served in Leonidio.
