POLYLIMNIO

A necklace of exquisite mountain lakes and pools with tiny turquoise waterfalls located near the villages of Haravgi and Kazarma off the Kalamata-Pylos road, 21k from Pylos. Reachable only by foot, but an easy walk and the water will certainly cool you off.

KORONI CASTLE

Koroni Castle, along with the fortified city of neighboring Methoni, served as a pivotal post for the Venetians in the southeast Mediterranean. These days, the spot, still inhabited, offers a superb view as well as an intriguing walk amid the little houses with flower gardens and the active Agios Ioannis Prodromos monastery.

METHONI CASTLE

One of Greece’s most impressive castles, Methoni Castle, was built in the 13th century by the Venetians and became a major commercial and transportation hub in the eastern Mediterranean. Interior structures dating back to various periods have been preserved. A stone bridge featuring 14 arches and the islet with the eight-sided emblematic Bourtzi tower are the standout attractions.

Piet de Jong’s watercolors depict some 17 jazzy pastel patterns decorating the walls and floors of Nestor’s Palace, along with frescoes of mythical beasts and some of the goblets and tableware used at the king’s banquets.

PYLOS

Niokastro is one of the best preserved fortresses in Greece and home to the Archaeological and Underwater Antiquities museums. Also in Pylos, the residence of Olympian Tsiklitiras, now exhibiting the paintings and memorabilia of French collector Rene Peaux.

VOIDOKILIA

Often likened to mushrooms or jellyfish because of its shape, Voidokilia, located next to the Gialova wetland, rates as one of the most stunning beaches of the Mediterranean. It features golden sand dunes and turquoise waters and is the main habitat of the African chameleon in Greece. The swimming here is immensely enjoyable, while the view from the nearby Paleokastro hill, easily reached by a track in 20 minutes, is marvelous.
