Keep Holiday Memories Alive With Forget Me Nωt

The quirky gift store where you can find unusual mementos to remember your trip to Athens

When your visit to the capital is drawing to a close and you are ready for some souvenir shopping, head to the picturesque quarter of Plaka and pay a visit to the souvenir shop with the quirky sign at number 100 of Adrianou street.Forget me Nωt, housed in what used to be the first home of Theodoros Kolokotronis, pre-eminent leader of the Greek War of Independence of 1821, opened in 2014 and started, as its owner likes to put it, a different kind of revolution.

Resembling a museum gift shop more than your average souvenir shop, it has been the main sales point and exhibition space for some of the bestcontemporary Greek designers, who have revolutionized souvenir-making by elevating cliché mementos into mini works of art.

The shop sits on two levels, with the lower one staying open from March 15 to November 1. Here, you can browse through a constantly renewedcollection of objects, from limited edition collectables and homeware to jewelry, wearables, accessories and books. Various brands are also featured in the store, like Salty Bag, Ancient Greek Sandals and Zeus+ Dion, whose creations make for one-of-a-kind presents that will impress friends and family.

If you don’t have room in your suitcase, you can visit the online shop to purchase whatever you like from the comfort of your own home and have it delivered to your doorstep.

TIN BAGS

Studiolav is a London-based studio, founded by two Greeks, Loukas Angelou and Vasso Asfi, offering product and interior design services. They draw inspiration from heritage, tradition and everyday encounters. This tin and leather tote bag was inspired by the blue-and-white tin food container (tenekes), an iconic everyday Greek object, used to store and transport olive oil and feta cheese. You can use the bag for your daily city wanderings or even as an umbrella holder at home

A TSOLIAS DOLL WITH A DIFFERENCE

One could call Tasos the evolution of the tsolias or Presidential Guard doll. The creation of Marianna Kelali, a character designer and illustrator at Busy Bee, Tasos is described as a crier for Attica’s traditional tavernas, who dreams of becoming an evzone (or tsolias) outside parliament.

PETIT BEURRE COASTERS

The petit beurre is the quintessential childhood cookie enjoyed by children and adults alike. Ceramic artist Christina Morali, of Skoumoky designers, has turned it into a coaster, that comes in clay or aluminum, which goes a treat with the real edible version.

Part of the appeal of the souvenir worldwide is undoubtedly the kitsch element. Few travelers expect quality or design when it comes to mementos from their trips. In fact, they often purposefully seek out the silliest or most useless trinkets to remember their trip by. In Greece, we can pride ourselves on offering tourists a great variety of souvenirs. Inspired by our rich history and mythology are the arm-crossed Cycladic statuettes, goggle-eyed owls and stern looking philosopher busts. There’s also our version of the ridiculous, like wooden phalluses as key chains or bottle openers. If, however, you are fed up with cliché souvenirs and want to surprise your friends and family with something classy and contemporary, there are many Greek designers who are seeking to redefine the souvenir, by drawing inspiration from the past without, however, trivializing it. Here are just a few of their creations.
