This project grew out of a Penelope Lively article on why children's books matter. One sentence resonated with me, and made me think anew regard my childhood.
"And the child who grows up familiar with the local library is at once privileged, a reading child, and somebody whose life is going to be immeasurably enriched, a reading adult."
I realised that was me. I loved my trips to the Gore Carnegie Library, the building, the books, the librarian in her cool clogs. I had never before thought of my childhood as a privileged one. Thank you Penelope Lively.
I wanted to create a work that expressed this. Eventually I settled on this idea, a cross stitch of this image of the library
I found a website that transformed the image into a cross stitch pattern, with all the DMC embroidery thread colours required, and 9 A4 pages that needed printing off and pasting together!
This is going to be a project that will take time!
