This started off when Geraldine Mills sent me a copy of one of the poems she wrote for the St Brigit's Garden Poetry Trail.
Spindle
This tree is laden with prayer fruit,
threaded squares of coloured wishes
brighter than its own coral clusters.
The branches bend low
with longings for peace,
so many longings for peace.
The first thing I did was to find an image of a spindle tree, to which I added the poem
My next idea of a fabric piece was inspired by the line "threaded squares of coloured wishes".
My concept developed into....
Initially I was thinking some sort of wall hanging, but I have developed the idea into being a garment.
A Spindle Coat
Now I need to get the squares of coloured wishes! I sense it is going to be a long term project
Squares of coloured wishes are coming together....every wish is embroidered in the personal script of that individual.
Here it is, my garmented Spindle project.
The garment is constructed from a natural linen fabric. It is a plain, loose fitting style. The sleeves hang low, a reflection of Geraldine's line, "The branches bend low".
The poem and the squares of coloured wishes are threaded in a coral coloured thread.
I read somewhere that red thread often refers to a consistent personal style or unified artistic voice that runs through an artist's oeuvre. I am a 21st Century Needlewoman, and I express myself with a needle and thread. On page 29 of the 'Design the Life You Love' project I undertook a number of years ago, a needle and thread image became my life metaphor. It represents my creativity and constructing, working my craft, is a symbol of mending, and a tool for expression. In the above Design the Life You Love project, I always drew the needle's thread in red.
Here is another artist's Red Thread concept
