President's Note

Happy Spring, everyone! I hope you enjoyed the sun over the past week. Spring brings with it a renewing of the spirit and a time to plan for thefuture – summer vacations, work projects, and how you will volunteer your time in the coming school or fiscal year for charitable organizations.

Now that we have completed the annual Engineers Week Banquet, Willamette Valley SWE is in the home stretch of the society’s year. Outreach programs remaining for the year are Certificate of Merit and a Girl Scout workshop. Professional programs will include a tour of ATI and a presentation by female faculty from OSU about their research, in addition to the popular monthly meet-n-greet lunches.

Regarding volunteers, SWE will need new officers and chairpersons for some of the positions for FY20 (starting July 1, 2019). It would be wonderful to rotate in some new (or returning from a break) members to these spots. Please contact me if you are interested in volunteering for WVS-SWE next year.

Thank you again to Toni Doolen and Irem Tumer for planning an amazing Engineers Week Banquet! It was wonderful to see the gathering of professionals from the valley on up to Portland, celebrating engineering and future engineers. Sue Galatz’s presentation was inspiring, and I hope those of you who attended enjoyed the evening.

Other Announcements and Opportunities

20th Annual Willamette Valley Engineers Week Banquet

We had over 250 attendees at the 20th Annual Willamette Valley Engineers Week banquet. The support of industry partners and Oregon State College of Engineering allowed us to sponsor over 80 students to attend the banquet. Our keynote speaker, Sue Galatz shared her insights on how to unlock your full potential using both your head and your heart.

We recognized three award-winning essays on women in science and engineering. Our first essay was written by Merannen Gatien, a 6th grader at North Albany Middle School, taught by Mary Hannan. Merannen chose to write about Mary Anning. Our second winning essay was written by Kylie Ostrin. Kylie is a 7th grader at North Albany Middle School and is in Jil Callaghan’s class. Kylie wrote about Virginia Apgar. Our third winner was Dristi Patel. Dristi is an 8th grader at Philomath Middle School and is in Teresa Nelson’s class. Dristi wrote about Katherine Johnson.

The OSU Karena Dokken Mentor Award was also announced and presented to Lauren Lippman, a Chemical Engineering student at OSU.

WVS SWE announced three scholarship awards at the banquet. Scholarship recipients were selected based on their academic achievements, leadership and community roles, as well as an essay describing why they want to be an engineer and what the scholarship will mean to them. The WVS SWE Endowment Scholarship was awarded to Sagarika Sharma, a senior at South Eugene High School. The second scholarship, sponsored by HP Inc., was awarded to Emma Motes, a senior at Junction City High School. The third scholarship, sponsored by Georgia-Pacific was awarded to Julianna Perez, a senior at Corvallis High School. Thanks to all who attended to help join in this celebration of all that engineers do and have to offer.
