Time: 9- 12

Location: Corvallis – TBD

Crescent Valley HS FIRST Robotics Team

The Crescent Valley High School FIRST Robotics Team is looking for a female engineer or scientist to act as a mentor to the team. If you are interested, please contact Tanya Carone (tanya.robotics@gmail.com ), Charles Dupuy – parent mentor (cgdupuy@comcast.net ) or SWE member Cindy Dahl (cdahl@onami.us )

The team is coached by Tanya Carone, who is a regulatory consultant on bio and pharma licensing. Tonya is recruiting mentors for the team, and really wants to have a woman in a technical role. The team membership is close to 40% girls (wow!), so it is important that they have role models. The mentors don’t have to be able to build or program the robot, but need to be able to give guidance on teamwork, scheduling, communication, and all the other aspects of building a product in a timely fashion. The team members are learning about working in a group and meeting deadlines – while having fun! They are a really dedicated group. (By the way, Tanya is also the coach for 3 middle school robotics teams. Amazing!)

Volunteer Request

The team relies on parents (and non-parent) volunteers to mentor the students. The students do all the work, and each sub-team has a student lead who is responsible for the technical direction. Even though we really like having mentors with technical skills, it is not required to be a role model, nor is it required to teach teamwork.

  • The team meets at CV Tuesday & Thursday 6-9 and Sunday 1-5 up to Christmas, and more frequently during the 6 week build season Jan-Feb

  • Mentors are volunteers, so there is no minimum time requirement. Once a week would be a good baseline.

Background on electrical:

  • The sub-team captain is a sophomore girl with 1 year experience. She took the position because we have a gap in electrical knowledge. This year's team manager was the electrical captain for the past 2 years, so he will certainly help. Even so, it would be great to have a female role model to support her.

    • In-depth electrical engineering knowledge is *not* required, since the majority of the electrical components are specified by the FRC organization, and there is documentation on hook-up and operation.
