JANE GINGELL, DIRECTOR

JANE GINGELL has an MA from Cambridge University in English Literature, and an MA from London University in History of Art. Since 1984 she has been working professionally in the field of Period Dance, Drama and Opera as a freelance lecturer, director, choreographer, researcher, teacher and performer. Jane specialises in the dance and theatre of the period 1570 - 1740, but also works on performance practice and dance in all periods from medieval times to the 1850's. Work includes directing Cavalli's LA CALISTO (Malmö Swedish Baroque Festival); Purcell's DIDO AND AENEAS at the Vilnius Russian Drama Theatre and Kaunas Opera Theatre (Lithuania); Rameau's ANACRÉON with Philip Thorby, London; choreographing Handel's ALCINA at the Latvia National Opera (Latvia); and directing Campra's L'EUROPE GALANTE at the Rundale Festival (Latvia). She has also choreograhed for the Handel operas ATALANTA and PARTENOPE with Midsummer Opera; and work for the Malmö Music Academy includes directing Handel’s ARIODANTE, and Eccles’ JUDGEMENT OF PARIS. With Malmö and the Royal Danish Conservatory she has directed Handel’s RINALDO and SERSE in Malmö, Helsingborg and Copenhagen.

Jane is currently collaborating with conductor Maris Kupcs in Riga on a Baroque Ballet "The Golden Apple" with music by John Eccles; and preparing a reconstruction of Campion's LORD HAY'S MASQUE with Wroclaw University Early Dance Group.

Jane’s current research areas are the Jacobean Masque, and the dances of 17th and 18th century Spain. She is author of “The Renaissance Dance Book”.
