On Wednesday, October 9th 2013, Mr. Leonard Everett, one of our chapter members, gave a presentation about the Teotihuacán pyramids, the anthropological museum in Mexico City, Xochicalco, the Mayan city of Coba, and the museums in Lima Peru.

Mr. Everett explained a little about the history of the various areas. He explained how Teotihuacán name means The Birth Place of the Gods, and how its civilization is believed to have peaked by 400 AD but then collapsed by the 7th or 8th Century.

Xochicalco, on the other hand, reached its height in the 4th or 5th Century. It was a very rich place with evidence that it supported many artisans and priests as well as having several ball courts. These are all sings of a rich civilization due to the fact that they had more than just the necessities of life.

Tenochtitlan is the center of Mexico City today. It was the home of the famous Montezuma’s Palace where the Spanish explorer Cortez decimated the peoples all for the desire of gold. Tenochtitlan was built in the center of a lake that just kept growing is size and taking up more and more of the lake until it covered it. Unfortunately today the modern city of Mexico City is actually visibly sunken because of its origins in a lake!

Mr. Everett also showed us pictures of some of the more famous artifacts found in various museums and landmarks. Thank you Leonard for an enjoyable and informative presentation!

Our chapter president, Amanda Black, also shared some photos of this summer’s public dig at Cedar Creek Earthenworks site. We will be having a more detailed report about the site itself this April as the head of that excavation, Mr. Chris Watts, will be joining us.
