On December 4th we held our annual Christmas gathering and meeting. Cookies, Timbits and other goods were there for the enjoyment of our guests. We had shirt options available for discussion and it looks like that ball is finally rolling in the right direction. We narrowed it down to one chest logo which unfortunately I can not figure out how to get it to transfer to this webpage!
Now it is the exact shirt to be determined as well as the colour. Members expect an e-mail soon about this. By the next meeting we should be ready to order. So make sure to come out to our next meeting on Feb 12, 2014, to place your shirt order! Katherine Graham will be presenting on L’Anse Aux Meadows, Newfoundland, a Viking settlement.
The speaker we had out for our meeting was once again Glen Boatman, who presented on the Heckelman Site (33Er14), Linear Ditches: a Perspective on the Middle and Late Woodland Time Periods in North Central Ohio (100BC – 500AD). He showed how they were famous for their platform pipes, then he showed us other artifacts found on site such as pottery shards, flint ridge chert bladelets, beaded necklaces, and burial finds near the Esch mounds.
He explained trade routes based on archaeological finds that included silver from Ontario that was probably retrieved through the Erie Islands and probably included Pelee Island. They also found crystal from Alabama, chert bladelets that were made from material found in Indiana and Mica (a ceramic style) from North Carolina. It is quite amazing to think about how far these items traveled from all by foot.
Thank you Glen, for once again providing us with an interesting glimpse into what you have been up to.
