In 1979, the poet debated whether or not to pursue the young woman who would eventually become his second wife, the totem-muse Valkyrie.
-----
a single glance.
a spirit's dance.
measured in inches of air
and infinite miles of convoluted emotion.
ravished and revered in a moment
that hangs heavy in the dreams spent
on other eyes, other love and lust
that gathered force...now gathering dust.
unuttered prayers.
unanswered stares
mean nothing to the blades of time...
yesterday stagnates and tomorrow is
expendable.
if you dare not seize the instant it
will flee before it began...and you can't
return to its shores to feast on the pain
of beasts that, in your fear, were never slain.
