The "Wild Life Area" or as it is now called the "Surrey Square Nature Garden" is a patch of land (≈476 m2) at the tail end of the Surrey Square Park, bordering Albridge Street and the Kinglake Estate, in Southwark, London.

The area is the site of two Council buildings demolished in the 60s and then left unattended and forgotten.

During many years it has developed into a little heaven for wildlife, surrounded as it is by large estates. The area was eventually incorporated in the Surrey Square Park (SSP). In his own turn Surrey Square Park is relatively close to another larger park (Burgess Park) but separate from it by large estates. The SSP is effectively a small island of green for the many people living in the densely populated habitation surrounding it.

The "Wildlife Area" is partially cut off from the main body of the Surrey Square Park by a play-area along Albridge Street. [Where s it? See it here].

For many years a group of dedicated residents tried to develop it into a wildlife garden to complement the Surrey Square Park and looked after it the best they could. Eventually with the help of the Southwark Ecology Officer Jon Best and the BBC Springwatch/Breathing Spaces program it became possible to achieve it.

This site has been set up to inform the visitors to the local importance of the place and hope to inspire interests.

Below is a provisional list of the known species present in the WLA:

The 6th and 7th of June 2008 has seen the greatest transformation of the area since the original buildings that covered the place were demolished. With the help of the BBC "Breathing Places" program, the front part of the Wildlife Area has been remodelled in order to accommodate a path and a sit down area. An embankment for wild flower has been created and stag beetle population establishment encouraged.

The 23rd, 24th and 25th of October 2008 the transformation was completed with new trees and other plants added to the site to improve biodiversity.
