Springwatch 6-7 June 2008

This page is dedicated to the "Breathing Place" transformation (Note that this corollary program to the BBC2 Springwatch series has since terminated) *.

It was a great occasion for Surrey Square and a milestone for the wildlife area.

Lots of residents took part and the two day of works it took to transfigure the place.

Thanks to all the volunteers that have given time and cheerful energy to help improve Surrey Square Park even if they did not live locally.

I was much touched by their dedication and enthusiasm.

The BBC broadcast can be found here. Some more photographs here.

* The "Breathing Place" program was associated with the television series "Spring Watch" and "Autumn Watch" on the BBC2 channel UK.

A short video of the event can be seen here

Some volunteers that took part in the works. The atmosphere was fantastic and even the Community Wardens chipped in

These are the people that made it all happen!! All have been super but in particular my heartfelt thanks to Jon Best, the Southwark Ecology Officer, and Naomi Arnold, Learning Project Manager , BBC London.

Before and after

People of all sort came around to give a hand. Here is Simon Hughes our MP. Not bad for a politician ;-)

Here some volunteers from the London Wildlife Trust, BCTV , etc. They all worked like professionals, and we can't thank them enough.

Together with local help they built a well constructed and pleasant environment with a thrifty and ingenious use of recycled and second-hand materials. With little, they built much.

Even people that lived in the Surrey Square area but later moved away showed up and helped. Some just walked in when they saw the commotion and others, that couldn't be on the grit and dirt itself made themselves nonetheless useful in their own ways. For instance a good Samaritan amongst the neighbours just come down with some homemade food for us and gave few words of support. Even children were drafted in!

Work finished everybody took part in the fête taking place on the Surrey Square Park. Good occasion to see neighbours and make new friends.
