Autumn Watch Day 2

24 October 2008

On day two the main preparations for the main day, tomorrow, have more or less been completed. The front end has been dug up in preparation of sowing and some planting on the proposed herbaceous border has already taken place.

The west side, close to the basketball court, have been cleared of buddleia and the surrounding vegetation pruned.

Lots of wood has been accumulated for future use in rising the bug bank.

The good weather was much appreciated and some filming shot.

A good start in the morning with stall and tables that already gave the work a more "official" status.

Work started in earnest with quick progress being made.

A filming crew was on site interviewing volunteers and recording the visit of groups of school children.

The west side, where the main tree planting event will take place, still needed some pruning around the existing hazel and on the more extended buddleia clumps.

Children got involved in all the activities.

The west side is now much more open and lit. The buddleia pruning has provided additional space for the new plants and trees.

The front end was dug up and the ground softened. The herbaceous edge start taking shape.

Some o the inhabitants were relocated. Here a grub od the lesser stag blesser stag beetleeetle (Dorcus parallelipipedus) shows how the area has already a good biodiversity and good potential for the future.

Everybody was elated when a fox unexpectedly strolled across the front end.

At the end of the day apart from the large stumps that will be removed on the third day of the event, all is ready in the new opening. Sunlight can now welcome the new saplings to be planted. Everybody was in a good mood and the work progressed rapidly.

Naomi is as usual never stops smiling.

People and visitors can take a moment rest for well deserved tea and cakes.

The only things left to do was to collect all the trophies found in the bushes.
