Autumnwatch Day 3

Autumn Watch Day 3 (25 October 2008)

This was the final day for the Autumn Watch.

The Autumn Watch main event was on Saturday. It included much of the actual planting and a number of other linked events were happening in Southwark.

It was a good day with sunshine and more people coming down, both locals and others like the Southwark Cyclists toured the various Autumn Watch events lending a hand.

The day started well with volunteers attending a start of the day briefing with local Councillor Jane Salmon showing up early and promising to come back later.

Jon Best, Southwark ecological Officer, is the first to get things moving.

Soon the place was a hive of activity.

Strange things were extracted from the ground. Left over from the days of the site creation...

New benches (sorely missed) were placed.

Filming was also an important part of the proceedings.

People started to come around and to take their children to see the place.

Saplings and seedlings were readied.

The west side of the area was particularly important because the main sapling planted took place there.

Last stumps were cleared out and the new mixture of ecological important plants placed.

Jane Salmon came back with Cllr Nick Stanton (Southwark council Big Cheese) and other important dignitaries. Simon Hughes called back again and all got stack in.

A little souvenir picture could not be missed, but they deserved it.

At the same time the front end started to take shape with mixture of seeds and bulbs sowed to replicate wild flower meadows.

Last bout of frenzy activities before sunset

It had been a long day and even Naomi looked a little tired

but everybody was happy of the day work.

Finally, the bug bank was mended and extended and the transformation was completed.

The old sign was placed on the back end of the area.

It was time for the inauguration of the finished site with the unveiling of the new sign

and a little celebration

The same night I saw three foxes sauntering around.
