Speaker: Paul Scriven, Head Gardener, Carey’s Secret Garden, Wareham
Paul gave a lively and interesting talk on the development of the garden since 2019 after it was purchased by the family owned business, Lush cosmetics company. Initially the site was overgrown and neglected it was by luck that the Victorian walls, constructed in 1883, surrounding three sides of the site were found. Since then, the land has been cleared and zoned garden areas developed. The gardens were opened in 2021. Plants are propagated and sold, a coffee shop has opened, educational events take place, herbs and other plants supply Lush for their natural products, honey is produced, and they work with Poole Harbour on the protection of nests for Ospreys that breed in the area. Four chicks were successfully hatched last year and the first check for this year has been seen. Many more plans are in place and the garden continues to grow. Visitors welcome.
Q & A took place at the end of Paul’s talk.
