The Village portion of the well field site had been used in a light industrial capacity for 80 years. Two spill reports, from 2003 (#0301330), and 2009 (#0908524) are on the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Spill List.In addition to the main well field building, out buildings and garages, there are many existing wells and well houses within the well field area on Village property. Some of these structures will likely require asbestos abatement at an estimated cost of $40,000.
The cessation of water production has created the necessity of decommissioning the existing wells and will likely cost between $650,000 and $750,000. In addition, there may be additional costs to mitigate subterranean infrastructure.
The presence of the former refuse dump located adjacent to the southern portion of the well field area also raises concerns. The landfill is listed on the NYS Register of inactive Hazardous Waste Disposal Sites (No. 828035). The site is suspected of having received hazardous waste and is therefore classified as "2 A", a temporary classification indicating insufficient site data and the need for further information before any actions are undertaken on the site.
