Much of the tourism problem in Venice stems from cruise ships. These big ships unload hundreds of tourists at a time. The tourists spend about 2 to 3 hours and then hop back on the ship. Italian government officials call this "low-quality tourism". However, the ships also bring income to Venice and create jobs. The author laments that when he visits Venice he feels like he is visiting a Las Vegas version instead of the real one. This is due to the lack of general sights and sounds one would expect from Venice instead of luggage, shopping bags, and large gatherings of people. Venice should not be seen like a visit to a theme park. Instead, we all should appreciate it for its rich culture and history.
