Welcome to the 2015 Venice Shops and Stalls Team Site ! This site will be used to display all our work from our Interdisciplinary Qualifying Project, IQP, and this blog will specifically show all our steps throughout the journey.
To introduce ourselves, we are a group of third year students studying at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, WPI, and we will be going to Venice in October to work on an IQP focusing on issues regarding the plateatici, or public seating areas/ stalls. The plateatici is a major problem for the city of Venice because it creates areas of high noise pollution, to the dismay of residents, and consumes space in already limited walkways, worsening pedestrian traffic. Our team hopes to ameliorate these problems by updating/reorganizing the VPC shops database, creating blueprints for reform, and developing a public space management application to regulate the area used by the plateatici.
Even though we’re just getting started, the team has done a lot! We started the week with our very first PQP meeting with our advisors, Professor Fabio Carerra and Professor Lorraine Higgins. This meeting was a really great opportunity for us to learn more about our problem and ask questions about the project. Since the second PQP meeting would be lead by us, we spent a lot of time this week preparing! We brainstormed ideas, researched the problem, gathered sources, considered our deliverables, and even began to learn some Italian! We also started to utilize tools such as google doc, calendar, and task to organize ourselves throughout the project. Finally, the team also wrote our first draft for our problem and mission statements, that you can view on the home page of our site!
Although we’ve certainly got our work cut-out for us, we’re all really excited to work on the project. Keep up with our posts to track our adventures and until next time!
Arrividerci !
