This week, Jon and I worked on writing the rough draft for the introduction section. I looked at a lot of past IQP papers to try and get an idea of how we should go about setting it up. What we need to do is really drive home the problems that the citizens face due to tourism, and effects that these problems have on Venice. To do this, the group needs to find some eye catching facts that will draw the reader in and make them realize the severity of the situation. I found one statistic so far that seemed pretty interesting; 66.9% of public space in Venice is used by tourists during the peak season of July to October. Its amazing to think that much more than half of the city is taken over by tourists, and thus leaves very little space for the locals to enjoy their own city. With our next revision of the introduction, we need to find some statistics on the population of Venice; the Commune de Venize should be a good place to start with this. Further, we need to get some data on the changes that are happening in the retail sector; this might be data that we pull from the latest IQP team that updated the database. Data from those sources, showing the decline in population and the rise in tourists stores, should help get across this idea that the city is disappearing, becoming slowly replaced by its tourists.
