Throughout our posts we've discussed the occupation of public space in Venice. But how does one actually go about occupying public space in the city? Do you just layout your tables and chairs and call it a day? Well, according to the Commune de Venezia (and a rough italian to english translation): Anyone interested in occupying public or private spaces open to public passages must submit an application to the competent commercial sector office according to the type of employment".
After you application has been processed and you can occupy the public space, the person using the land has certain obligations such as : maintaining the land in a clean condition and being responsible for any third party damages as a result of his occupation. There are also many other rules about what can and cannot be done on the land as well as what steps to take to pay for your lease or any fines you may incur.
