the Research pages are intended to be a continuous update of your research progress and highlights. You results & brief analysis will go here but not the details of how you did it (e.g. the methods). Think of it as a sort of highlights of results page so that Dr. B and the mentors can quickly check on your progress.
(don't need everything - just highlights - e.g. an image/result from each day you worked. If you worked on two different protocols in a day - then show a result from each, etc).
FYI - terminology - sometimes we call these 'research pages' or 'student Pages' or 'labnotebook page' - apologies in advance for the confusion.
8/14/23 - moved all links to the Google Docs 'LinksToResearchPages_VDSs'
FRI metnors - add a new link for each person to their page as well. These just point to the folders)

Individual Research Pages Folder in GDrive
Access to Research Pages:
1) Log on into the VDSclass account
2) On your research page, share with your personal email account
OR
1) Work on the research page in the VDSclass account
Guidelines for posting on Research Pages:
Put a line and 'Week 1&2', 'Week 3&4', etc.
put a horizontal line after each section so you can tell where each begins or ends (there is a menu item in GDrive for this)
Post in reverse chronological order (newest stuff on top - so we don't have to scroll down so much)

Tips & Hints for Research Pages
Make your images a decent size
Include captions or text describing the image or images
Don't post links to files-
Post images by uploading them (keep files in your Google Docs)
Use the 'snipping' tool if necessary to get a small screen shot of what you want to show - but often you want to save the raw data image in your GDrive
you may post a link to your Target Page that you create
Your Research Page should have images: gels (well annotated) and other images of research like graphs and tables of date (not just text!)
examples of things to include:
Transformation plates
nanodrop images
RE digest gel
PCR gel images
yields from Midiprep
yields from protein purification
tables of absorbance values, bar graphs of enzyme activity
vitrual screening results tables (e.g. Top 10 results)
PyMol images of top 1 or 2 docked ligands
etc.
Captions: you should have enough information in the caption to let the reader (Dr. B) understand what it is.
Brief analysis of the result (e.g. 1-2 sentences of why it did or didn't work, next steps, etc.).
OLD Instructions for Mentors to Create A Research Page for a Student: (When we had individual student folders on GDrive instead of UT Box folders)
1. On VDSStaff Google Drive:
Under the StudentFoldersVDSs, make one for the student (if not done already), create a Google Folder and name it: YEARSTARTED_UTEID_FirstNameLastInitial
e.g. 2018_ dcZ42_DianeC_
Within that Student's folder, create a Google Doc and name it: YEARSTARTED_UTEID_FirstNameLastInitial_ResearchPage
e.g. 2018_czZ42_DianeC_ResearchPage
add the same line to the Header at the top (double click the top of the page and paste it in)
Share the folder with the student
Right Click on the folder name,, Click 'Share' , Enter the Gmail address of the student (- use their @ utexas if possible)
NOTE: If they don't want it shared with their Gmail (e.g. they are in the witness protection program) - then share it with VDSClass@gmail.com account
Share the document with Dr. B by putting in the ResearchPagesVDSs folder as well as the student's individual folder:
Go back to your student folder, select the document, and hit SHIFT+Z
An "Add To" selection will pop up. Select "Research Pages" and hit "Ad
Copy and Paste the template from the TEMPLATE_YEAR_UTEID_NAME_StudentResearchPage

SHARED RESEARCH PAGE - a communal page of highlight from EVERYONE (Dr. B will let you know when to post here)
Shared_ResearchPage2019FallVDSs
- Archive of VDSSharedResearchPage (for older than 2 weeks stuff)
Every week, students upload highlights for that time period to the shared VDS Shared Research Page.
Then the next time period, remove your old content to your personal Research Page and replace it with new content for that week on the Shared Research Page
Whenever you get an image, graph or piece of data – post it to your Research Page. Sharing failed results is encouraged because they facilitate understanding of the science and will help others as they overcome hurdles in their projects.
To create a new page - see the bottom of this webpage.
