Using the book Exploring Journalism and the Media, do these two tasks:

Answer questions 1-4 on page 9 after reading pages 4-8

In your team, make a timeline of the events from your reading.

Take a picture of the timeline and publish it onto a blog page called Newspaper Project.

Take notes on Journalistic Writing in class and then do these for practice:

Use two straight news stories for your newspaper project.

Story One is "Dog Shoots Owner" and is located here.

Story Two is "Earthquake" and is located here.

Save the stories in Google Docs(drive) for later use.

Identifying straight news stories

  1. After reading The Milford Mirror:

  3. On a piece of paper, write down the headline and byline for each story
  4. Record the 5 W's and H in each story.
  5. Submit for credit by the end of class.

Using the handout called "Featuring Features", work with a team and:

  1. find all ten types of features from magazines in the library.
  2. Record the name of the magazine with the date.
  3. The headline and byline of the story
  4. Identify what kind of feature it is.
  5. Explain what makes the article that type of feature.
  6. Look over this handout on improving word choice.
  7. In the text, read pages 288-312 and do all of the questions on page 313.
  8. Read this story about the dynamics of a high school cafeteria.
  9. Then, go to the cafeteria and ask kids to talk about the subject in the article and conduct interviews.
  10. Research the topic in the library.
  11. Write a story that features the Foran HS cafeteria. Use quotes from many people you interviewed and use facts and cited quotes from your library research.
  12. Use the proper format for feature writing.
  13. Write a feature story in Google Docs and share it with Mr. Turtola and other members of your team.
  14. Look at websites like this one to get some ideas for a story.
  15. Using the feature story you wrote in Google Docs, be sure to share your document with your teammates and Mr. Turtola
  16. Choose two teammates to edit your story using the exercise called "I Heard, I Wondered, I Noticed".
