In order for me to get an idea of where the SEB should be, I made a composite with a Jupiter image from 2008 showing the SEB with a CMII about the same of the one on Dec 27. See attachment. I know the De's are different by 3.5 degrees, but I drew an arrow that lined up with the SEB southern boundary in the 2008 image. As I suspected, the dark blotches are spreading Westward in the zone just south of where the SEB should be. But perhaps the revived SEB will extend further south than in 2008 leaving a much narrower zone.

Fine details visible over Jupiter including the area of the SEB revival. Parts of the orange SEB are intermingled with dark spots. This area has about doubled in size over the last month!

I imaged on the night of 2010-12-08UT to obtain the image on the right with a central meridian system II (CMII) within 4 degrees of the image on the left taken on 2010-11-27UT. Comparing the images, it looks to me that the dark spots in the STr zone above the hidden SEB are spreading out Westward in the STrZ jet stream. However the total number of dark spots has increased! Based on these two pieces of data along with the images, I suggest that the source of the spots is the large circular looking area on the Eastern limb of both images(see arrows) which other observers have shown to be a spread-out pattern of red and white ovals.

These images show two lines of spots that are visible where the South Equatorial Belt should be. The belt is covered by white clouds of ammonia ice crystals. Jupiter rotates right to left. The Oval BA that changed to a reddish color a couple of years ago is visible on the upper right limb on the left image. On the right image it is visible to the upper left of GRS.
