My thoughts said simply to keep going it wasn’t far to the petrol station. The fuel indicator was down to its last bar and the petrol symbol was flashing. Would I have enough fuel was my main concern now. The miles past ever so slowly, it was like the countdown of a space ship launch as the mileage signs past. Twenty, nineteen, eighteen........... three, two, and one. The junction was ahead and I had made it to the services.
Extract from the book 'The Land of Diddeley Dee'
Our little convoy rode on into the darkness with Brian waving me on to go in front. I wasn’t quite sure why, maybe it was because the light from my headlight was very bright and seemed to illuminating the whole of Anglesey in front. Mike had made comment on how bright they where the previous week when we where heading for the ferry. I set my speed to fifty miles per hour to start with knowing that if the tyre repair did fail I would have a chance of controlling the bike to a stop. In my mind I was just hoping that the tyre would hold and with each passing mile across that dark island my confidence in the repair grew. Even though I had two friends riding behind me I felt alone on my bike riding through the darkness and it is at these times the mind can play some tricks. In my mirrors all I could see was darkness and two sets of headlights in the distance but I couldn’t make out which was which. In front the occasional on coming traffic headlights would irritate my tired eyes; the brightness seemed to burn deep into my retina.
