Settlement Change

(1) Distinguish between rural and urban settlement, with reference to the rural-urban continuum

(2) Show understanding of issues that impact the rural-urban fringe:

• greenfield developments
• suburbanisation
• counterurbanisation

This unit helps to set the scene for us as we start to look at the impact that settlement has on the geographical landscape.

The first topic here gets us to get to grips with what the difference is between rural and urban geography in settlement. We need to run through a few definitions and then it is time to get into the first section

1. What is the difference between rural and urban settlement? What is the rural-urban continuum?

2. What are the main issues/ challenges in the rural/urban fringe? (What do we mean by this phrase anyway?)
