(1) Describe the main fertility and mortality mesures - crude birth rate, crude death rate, total fertility rate and infant mortality rate
1. Crude Birth Rate
2. Crude Death Rate
In this section you are going to need to use the 'Learning check list' to take notes from the Essential Geography textbook about each of the definitions that make up Population Change.
Crude Birth Rate
The CBR is the number of live births born in a year for every 1,000 head of population. Birth rates are usually higher in LEDCs than in MEDCs.
Crude Death Rate
The CDR is the number of deaths in a year for every 1,000 head of population. Death rates are usually very low in MEDCs but have started to increase slightly due to the ageing population. Death rates in LEDCs have traditionally been higher than in MEDCs but are falling at a fast rate in many LED countries.
Population Balance
If there are more births than deaths in a country, there is said to be Natural Population Increase. If there are more deaths than births in a country, there is said to be a Natural Population Decrease.
Migration Balance
Most places in the world are effected by migration. When people move into a country this is immigration and when people leave a country this is emigration. The difference between the number of people who move in and move out helps us to work out the net gain or loss in relation to migration.
