Part 6

I’ve had my moments during this current bout with unemployment where I imagine myself out on the street. I live in Hollywood so I see the possibility pretty much everywhere I go. It’s not lost on me. I put myself into the shoes of people who have reached the point of desperation where they are begging people for spare change.

Granted, there are some who are just looking for a handout or just enough for booze or their latest fix. Some, however, are genuinely hungry. Some are desperate. Either way, it sucks. People shouldn’t have to live that way. Everyone deserves to live the life they’ve always dreamt of living. Everyone deserves to live in a nice, safe neighborhood. Everyone deserves to live in a home where everyone within it has their own space. Everyone deserves to find work that is meaningful to them. Everyone deserves to be able to provide for themselves and their families.

I don’t understand why this isn’t the case. Just because that’s the way it is doesn’t mean that’s the way it should be. Most people aren’t looking to live in ginormous homes, drive ridiculously fancy cars or be paid a trillion dollars to exist.

I marvel at the idiocy in the workplace. I marvel at how some people can be a complete dolt and be paid six figures. I read some of the writers on some of these websites and I hope for their sakes they save their best work for their personal blogs.

I marvel at the fact that some people have such low value for writers that they don’t want to pay them for anything because they are providing “exposure”. For people starting out, this is perfect acceptable but at a certain point it’s only right to pay them SOMETHING – a gas card, a gift card or even twenty dollars.

Of course, I want more than that.

I definitely don’t want to get stuck in the pop culture/celebrity ghetto. That market is already oversaturated. I care more about the people outside the spotlight. I care more about the people who have talent and not just looks – people who are a brand and not just a product. I like their stories. I like telling stories and everyone has a story. Everyone has a perspective. Everyone has goals and dreams and ideas.

So that’s what I’m writing about. And I’m audacious (there’s that word again) enough to believe that the majority of the world could care less about who lives where, what they’re wearing, who they’re dating today or who they’re married to this week.

At some point, a lot of people are going to start spitting out the pop culture/celebrity shit that gets shoved down their throats. People are going to need and want more. They are going to demand credit for some level of intelligence.

And I plan to be there for that revolution.
