Past Perfect Continuous Story

The next day when Mr. Orange went to the park, he saw Baby BE out of the corner of his eye. She was signaling him to come with her. He walked towards her and she led him to the meadow. There he saw several of his friends.

“Surprise!” they yelled.

“What’s this?” asked Mr. Orange.

“Happy Birthday!” they replied.

“My birthday was last week!” Mr. Orange replied.

“I know,” answered Mrs. Green. “We had been planning on having a party last week, when we found out you went out of town, so we had to postpone it.”

“Oh. Well thank you,” answered Mr. Orange. “I am really surprised! By the way, did you say,' had been planning’?”

“Yes,” Mrs. Green replied.

“That seems like it has all of us in it, right? Had is Havehas and Red Ed. Been is Baby Be and Ened. And planning is me and Mrs. Green. Right?”

“Yes, you are right. It includes everyone here at this party,” Red Ed responded.

“Cool!” said Mr. Orange. “So what does it mean?”

“Well,” said Ened, “It means that something was continuing in the past before another thing happened. Mrs. Green was saying that before we found out you went out of town, we had already been planning your party. The planning was going on until the time when we found out you left.”

“Oh. Can you give me more examples?”

“Let’s each give him an example of what was going on this morning before he arrived,” suggested Havehas.

“Me first,” said Baby BE. “I had been counting the hours before the time of the party arrived. I was so excited!”

“I had been rocking in my rocking chair for an hour when Baby Be came to my house and said it was time to go!” said Red Ed.

“We had been carefully decorating your cake when we realized we didn’t have any candles, and we had to stop at the store on the way here to buy some,” added Havehas and Ened.

“I had been quickly setting up all the decorations in the park when I realized my watch was wrong and I had plenty of time to get ready,” Mrs. Green chimed in.

“That’s great,” said Mr. Orange. “Thanks so much for this party. I will try to tell you about my morning. This morning I had been planning on sleeping in when I saw what a beautiful day it was. I couldn’t resist. I had to come to the park. It is my favorite place ever! So let’s celebrate! Can we have some cake?”

“I had been hoping you would say that,” said Baby Be.

“Great!” chucked Mr. Orange. “Let’s eat!”

Let’s Practice Finding Havehas, Red Ed, BE,

Ened, Mr. Orange, and Mrs. Green

Read these quotes from the story. Draw boxes around the Havehas and Red Ed word, the BE and Ened word, and the ING ending. Color the Havehas boxes yellow. Color the Red Ed boxes red.
