One day after Mr. Orange finished his walk around the pond, he decided to visit the baseball park. A Little League game was going on and was in the ninth inning. Mr. Orange looked at the small crowd, and was surprised to see Ingrid and BE watching the game.
"They are playing baseball," said BE. "The boy with a blue hat is swinging a bat."
"That's right," Ingrid replied. "The boys are all playing baseball."
Mr. Orange looked around at the boys in the game. He noticed that it was almost WILL's turn at bat. He decided to tell Baby BE.
"Hi BE and Ingrid! Look over there. Do you see the boy who is next in line to bat? That is my friend WILL. Do you know him?"
"No," answered Ingrid. "You can introduce us after the game."
"Sure. Look. WILL's team just won! Let's go congratulate him."
Ingrid, BE and Mr. Orange walked over to the dugout and WILL welcomed them in.
"Hey!" WILL said. "Did you see that last hit? It must have gone all the way over to the playground. We got three runs from that hit."
"It was awesome," replied Mr. Orange. "Congratulations! By the way, these are my friends Ingrid and BE. I want to introduce them."
"Hi!" said WILL. "Will you learn to play baseball when you get older, BE?"
"I am learning now," answered BE.
"Well, she is learning by watching," added her mother, Ingrid. "Really, she doesn't think much about the future. She mostly talks about what is happening now."
"I love the future," WILL replied. "It is my favorite thing to think about. Maybe we can figure out some way to talk about what is happening now, but the now will be in the future."
"OH. That's cool," said Mr. Orange. "So you would talk about what is going on and all the actions that are happening, but you would be thinking about them or imagining them as they happen in the future. I want to try that."
"Okay," WILL encouraged them. "Let's think about some time in the future that we want to imagine. How about this summer? Let's think about what we will be doing in the summer. We will use all of our names to show that an action (Mr. Orange) is in the future (WILL) and it is happening at the time we are speaking about (BE and ING). Who wants to go first?"
"This summer I will be watering my tomatoes," said Ingrid.
"This summer I will be taking swimming lessons," said BE.
"This summer I will be going to the baseball championship game," said WILL.
"This summer I will be taking walks around the park and visiting my friends," added Mr. Orange.
"Those are all great sentences," answered WILL. "Unfortunately, though, I have to get going now. If I don't go home now, I will be spending the evening in my room as a punishment for being late."
"Oh," Ingrid replied. "I am glad you like to think about the future. I don't want you to get in trouble. We will be coming to the baseball park again in the near future to watch more of your games. Keep an eye out for us and come say hello when you see us."
"OK," Will answered. "I will be looking for you at each game. Have a great evening! Bye everyone!"
"Bye," they all replied.
