Hi! Mr. Orange here. Sometimes I want to explain something that I did NOT do, and sometimes I want to ask a question. If I have one of my friends on my left, I use him/her to help me start the question or negative sentence. If there is no one on my left, I have to bring in my dog to help me. His name is DO. Let’s see how this works in different tenses.
Here is Simple Present tense:
I am all by myself here. I do not have any friends to my left. If I want to ask questions, I need my dog to help me.
Ex: Do you eat grapes?
Do we run fast?
Do we talk a lot?
If I have my snake out, the snake must be with the dog. Animals always stay together in my sentences.
Ex: Does he cook well?
Does she play basketball?
Does it feel hot?
If I want to talk about things that are NOT true, I have to use my dog also. I also use a black box to show NOT
Ex: I do not like corn.
You do not drive.
We do not smoke.
Again, if I have my snake out, the snake must be with my dog.
Ex: He does not skip well.
She does not iron much.
It does not stink in this room.

Here is Present Continuous Tense:
Look to my left. I have a friend there. It is BE. I do not need my dog to help me. I just need the black box to show NOT. Here are some examples:
Am I walking?
Are you eating?
Is he thinking?
I am not swimming.
They are not reading.
We are not cooking.
Here is Simple Past:
I have no friend on my left. What will I do? I will have to call my dog, DO. When DO comes over, he will stand next to Red Ed. Red Ed loves dogs. When Red Ed stands next to DO, DO will have to change his name to the past form, DID.
Here are some examples:
Did you come to school today?
(Notice: “come” does not need to change to past because Red Ed is standing with DO. He is not standing next to “come.” There is only one Red Ed, so you only need to show past one time in the sentence.)
Did I finish my work yesterday?
Did they win the race?
She did not buy a book.
We did not play the game.
I did not sing a song.
Here is Simple Future:
I have a friend on my left again! It is Will. Will can show negatives and questions for me. I do not need my dog. Just move Will to the beginning of the sentence to show questions. For negatives, just add NOT before Mr. Orange.
Here are some examples:
Will I go to town soon?
Will you bring some cookies?
Will they dance at noon?
She will not take a test.
We will not cry.
He will not swim slowly.
Here is Past Continuous:
In this situation, I have two friends on my left, so I do not need to use my dog to help me. My two friends work together to make WAS or WERE. I use WAS or WERE to make the question or negative sentence. You just have to know which one to use. For a negative sentence, add NOT before Mr. Orange.
Here are some examples:
Was he walking to school when the rain started?
Were they reading while he was writing?
Was she eating when the lights went out?
I was not lying while I was telling you that story.
You were not driving to school at 10:00 a.m. yesterday.
We were not smiling while we were taking the test.
Here is Present Perfect:
Again, I have a friend on my left, so I do not need my dog to help me. Havehas can show negatives and questions for me. You just have to decide if HAVE or HAS matches the person or thing in the subject part of the sentence. Then put HAVE or HAS at the beginning of the sentence for a question. For a negative sentence, add NOT before Mr. Orange.
Here are some examples:
Has she gone to the zoo?
Have we written enough letters?
Have they given her flowers?
I have not blown my nose.
She has not eaten her dessert.
You have not worked today.
