Getting out of the guardroom was a little tricky. The doors were jammed shut with spikes. Some creative use of magic popped the spikes out. On the other side of one door was an ooze of some kind. It was large and looked like a farm's effluent pond. The party slew it before it even got to act.
The party were wounded badly from Mormesk's attack. Some of them were low on slots and health, and to make it worse, the wraith's damage had reduced their maximum hit points. They were tired from a day of activity.
So, of course, they continued exploring.
They spent the day exploring the mining tunnels east of the main entrance.
Late afternoon, they came across a room with a waterfall feeding a damned pool. A canal of fast-flowing water led from the dam into a low cave, rushing out of sight. The room had three exits - the canal, the mine passage they entered and a smaller passage. Of course, the party jumped into the canal.
A wild ride through darkness sent them plummeting over a waterfall and onto rocks. Oskar managed to grab the lip, the rest fell, saved only by a featherfall spell from Immeralios.
At the bottom of the ravine were some bugbears with picks and shovels. At the top of the ravine was another bugbear and a male dark elf. Combat ensued.
At the bottom of the rift, Jeremus the monk moved out of combat, using his superior mobility to evade the bugbears. The bugbears therefore decided that they'd go for the easy target - Immeralios the wizard, left unprotected. They pounded him to pulp, even putting the boot in after he was unconscious.
Askith the sorcerer headed up to the top of the rift to find two dwarf rogues looking identical, and no dark elf. Obviously one of the rogues was Oskar and the other was an imposter. But which one? Both spoke in Oskar's voice; both knew things that only Oskar knew. The sorcerer (with STR 8) decided to deal with it by trying to shove the two rogues off the cliff. His first couple of attempts failed utterly, his third attempt was a lucky fluke. Both Oskars fell off the cliff, landing near the unconscious body of Immeralios.
The remaining bugbears tried to run. Only one made it.
The running bugbear climbed to the top of the rift and cheesed it out of there, followed by one of the Oskars yelling "those bugbears wiped out my tribe, don't let them escape!" The other Oskar and Askith followed, leaving Jeremus and an unconscious Immeralios at the bottom of the waterfall, unable to see or hear what was going on.
Jeremus did not want to leave an unconscious party member in a cave where ghouls and oozes lived, so he stayed and meditated under the waterfall.
Oskar and Askith caught up to the bugbear, thanks to good use of a web spell, and killed it. They found no sign of other-Oskar. Oskar spent time searching for secret passages while Askith went ahead.
Askith came across a spectacularly-decorated passage. Carvings floor to ceiling. An ornate door, 10 feet wide, carved with images of Dwarven gods. Askith, alone, opened the door…
The dark elf said, in a polite voice, "Ahh, Askith, I believe. What are you doing here?"
"I'm here to loot your stuff."
"Oh, really?"
"Yeah, what are you going to do about it?"
As it turns out, the dark elf did a lot about it. In particular, a grease spell and lots of spiders descending from hiding places in the darkness of the high ceiling.
Oskar ran round a corner just in time to see a spider close the double doors, hiding his view of the room. In the darkness, he could see some strange substance coating the floor. He elected not to cross the greased area, instead hesitating and finally blowing his horn in some attempt to summon help.
Help did not come. Help was meditating under a noisy waterfall.
We ended the session with Askith dying or dead in a room filled with spiders and the rest of the party scattered, exhausted, wounded, and out of resources.
