STEP 4: Extension

The Extension stage is the most important. It allows students to take what they have just learned and put it into action. Since the goal of proficiency-based instruction is real communication, students need plenty of opportunities to practice the grammar rule. In this step, use activities that allow students to communicate while still continuing the theme of the entire lesson. Below, you will find several example activities that progress from more focused tasks to more open-ended ones. This is always a good way to design your extension activities.
