TSR licensed game

1992, $49.95

"JUMPIN' JUPITER--THIS IS REAL ROLE-PLAYING!

"Matrix Cubed picks up where SSI's popular Countdown to Doomsday leaves off--and keeps on going! A much bigger universe means much more to explore--including, for the very first time, Jupiter! And, with nearly twice as many new and different monsters, combat is fast, furious, and futuristic!

"Role-playing in space has never been this good: Matrix Cubed uses an enhanced version of SSI's award-winning AD&D computer fantasy role-playing game system. That means serious role-playing--your characters gain levels and skills as they explore the vast, complex and dangerous universe of the 25th century.

"Transfer characters from Countdown to Doomsday or create new ones. Meet friends and enemies from the last adventure as your new quest unfolds.

"Aided by higher character levels and better equipment, you and your team must scour the solar system and rescue scientists who can build the Matrix Device. This machine can transform any substance into pure energy, and is the only hope left for the devastated and enslaved Earth!" --1992

Personal note: I normally refrain from editorializing, but Countdown to Doomsday (more often referred to as simply Buck Rogers) was one of my very favorite SSI games from the final days of its Amiga support. I actually pre-ordered Matrix Cubed for the Amiga from Electronic Arts, SSI's distributor at the time. I was crushed when it was canceled. I'm still a bit upset about it. At least, EA had already sent me my free game (it was a buy one, get a classic free promotion), so I consoled myself by playing EA's Earl Weaver Baseball. The Amiga version was actually apparently reviewed by at least one German magazine.

"Armored warfare of the 1990's. What will it be like when modern war machines-sleek, turbine-propelled, missile-armed, laser-guided-clash on the battlefield?

"The answer can be found when you play the definitive simulation of modern land battles: MECH BRIGADE.

"We've compiled the combat ratings for practically every weapon type found in the arsenals of the U.S., West Germany, England, and Russia: 10 tanks, 6 self-propelled anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM), 4 helicopters, 6 recon/command vehicles, 7 armored personnel carriers, not to mention a huge roster of mortars, artillery, surface-to-air missiles, and infantry weapons.

"Using a modified version of the popular "Kampfgruppe" combat system, hit probabilities for every weapon are calculated instantly. Combat is resolved down to individual tanks, guns, and soldiers.

"Four scenarios are provided, each in a different area of West Germany. You can also create your own with the Random Setup. During solitaire, the computer can direct either side." -Spring 1985

"The year is 1986. The great war in Europe is over, and Russia won. It now controls all of Germany and Norway. From its newly-acquired bases in Hamburg and Bergen, Russia threatens to project its airpower into the North Atlantic.

"NORTH ATLANTIC '86 is a massively-scaled land-sea-air simulation of a hypothetical Soviet-NATO confrontation in the very near future. As the Soviet aggressor, you can launch a paratrooper assault to take Iceland and the Faeroe Islands while attacking NATO ships and bombing Britain's main naval base at Scarpa Flow. A successful campaign will leave Britain isolated, her spirit devastated.

"As commander of NATO forces, you must attempt to hold Iceland against the Soviet onslaught. At the same time, Britain's morale must be bolstered by keeping her supplied. This means NATO convoys must get through!

"NORTH ATLANTIC '86 lets you get your hands on all state-of-the-art weaponry systems. Their names are as deadly as they are colorful: surface-to-air missiles such as the Sea Dart; the Exocet, Tomahawk, and Harpoon surface-to-surface missiles; NATO fighters and bombers such as the Tomcat, Eagle, and Falcon; their Soviet counterparts such as the Flogger, Badger, and Backfire bomber. Every ship is also rated for electronic warfare (i.e., ECM & ECCM) and sonar.

"Using the highly successful game system seen in GUADALCANAL CAMPAIGN, this strategy simulation is at once highly complex and detailed yet easily playable. Combat is resolved down to the last destroyer, fighter plane, and submarine!

"Each game in the 'WHEN SUPERPOWERS COLLIDE' series presents a different scenario of possible NATO-USSR confrontations in various tinderboxes around the world.

"'Germany 1985' led off with a Soviet invasion into West Germany through the Fulda Gap.

"'RDF 1985' proposed a Russian seizure of the oil-rich Persian Gulf, which demanded an urgent U.S. response with its Rapid Deployment Force.

"'Baltic 1985' hypothesized a NATO rescue of its besieged forces in Berlin.

"Now, we are proud to announced the fourth installment in our popular series: NORWAY 1985. This time, the Soviets choose Norway as their window of attack. In addition to the normal complement of fighting units, this game features ski troops.

"Like its predecessors, NORWAY 1985 boasts all the ingredients of a great wargame. Beautiful scrolling color graphic displays, a simple yet sophisticated movement system, and realistic combat rules. In solitaire play, the computer can direct either side." -Spring 1985

"From the authors who brought you the award-winning 'Knights of the Desert' and 'Battle for Normandy' comes another wargaming classic: OPERATION MARKET GARDEN.

"Launched in September 1944, this operation required three Allied airborne divisions to secure six bridges in Holland, thus opening a way for the 30th Corps to cross into northern Germany. But due to over-hasty strategic decisions and pure bad luck, Operation Market Garden fell one bridge too short--and failed.

"In contrast, SSI's OPERATION MARKET GARDEN is a gaming success. It is really two games in one: The Advanced Game for hardcore strategists and the simpler Intermediate Game for up-and-coming armchair generals.

"But no matter which level you choose, you'll be playing a feature-laden operational-level simulation with a tactical flair. From bridge blowing and building to the vagaries of weather, every historical detail has been included.

"PANZER STRIKE! boasts the highest resolution of any of our World War II titles. Each unit symbol represents either one tank/gun or a squad of infantry; each square of the 60x60 map, 50 yards. The action is so detailed, you'll feel like you're caught in the middle of the blitzkrieg of the Germany Army in all its major campaigns.

"Three theaters are covered: The entire Eastern Front, the Western Front in 1940, and the North African campaign. This tactical game includes practically every ground weapon used in those theaters--from tanks, tank destroyers and artillery to trucks, mortars and machine guns.

"The ratings for armored vehicles go beyond even our usual high standards for realism. For example, armor is segmented into front and side of hull, front and side of turret, and top.

"In PANZER STRIKE!, you can simulate single battles or an entire campaign. The former lets you play against another player or the computer. If you wish to depart from the historical setups already provided, you can create your own by buying your forces, drawing new maps and establishing different missions.

"The campaign scenario pits you against the computer. It creates the maps and determines the type of battles: assaults, pursuits or meeting engagements. The ultimate objective of the campaign is to fight--and win--as many battles as possible before the war ends." --Fall 1987

"A multiple-character role-playing game, PHANTASIE is set in medieval times. You command a group of one to six characters with such roles as monk, priest, wizard, ranger, thief, or fighter. The priest is skilled in curative, protective magic, while the wizard's spells are quite offensive. With low hit points, they aren't very good in hand-to-hand combat. For that, you'll need the ranger or the fighter.

"With this motley crew, you search the lands for the Nine Rings with which you can defeat the Black Lord. You must map out new terrain, explore maze-like dungeons, solve puzzles, learn spells, gain experience, and battle countless monsters. It's a strategy oriented quest with more obstacles than you can shake a wand at!

"All this is conjured by beautiful Hi-Res color graphics and a spell-binding storyline that help suspend reality and launch you into our magical world. No computer-carrying adventurer will want to miss out on the glorious excitement and enchanting experience that is PHANTASIE." --Winter 1985
