On the local scene, things are shifting with regards to resource provision in our community, and a project we had tabled called the Dance SOS Center was brought out of moth balls and the design re-purposed into a dance wiki to help fill in a few gaps. The idea behind this is to create a community online dance garden where everybody has a voice who chooses to have a voice, and to have a place to go to online that you can sort out everything you need to know, and you can get a good feel for what our dance company looks, feels, plays like. It is designed so that it doesn’t rely on ONE person, or ONE organization, or FUNDING to be maintained. It is designed so peeps can interact by providing input on facebook, join a google group, come to a community meeting, they can submit information easily through an online form, they can also give feedback anonymously about the state of the dance community with an annual “Taking our Dance Temperature”. We are also playfully considering how to design it for organic “pest control” and “disease” so the garden stays healthy. Our first community meeting was super juicy, super positive, super great ideas, and we did a great job staying on track prioritizing with some creative exercises sources our collective sense of how we experience good communication and values we cherish. Witnessing synchronicity happening another great resource began to flesh out after we launched the Wiki called SB Dance Sugar. We are intentionally shaping our expression to complement her awesome free resource. While SB Dance Sugar focuses on the "user-ship" side of dance, the Wiki focuses on servicing dance makers and is a bit more extensive in scope and design.
Cybil is on baby break, so we thought to loosen up our studio showing format a bit to welcome creatives from all genres in event there are peeps in the community hankering to get their performance fix in. Stephen, Misa, and Hannah Ruth will serve as the evening's hosts. We LOVE this format! SELAH Dance Collective pictured left at our last Salon Showing. Artists signed up already include: Nancy Evans Dance Theatre, ArtBark, and Hannah Ruth and Misa.CLICK HERE to apply!
We just sort of assumed, given how we organize, that we would be an entity that lurked in the shadows. Suddenly we find that ArtBark’s name is listed with some of the leading national names in dance today. This isn’t to say we make work like these groups, or that we would want to make work like these artists, but suddenly, we are visible in a much larger way – and of course, feel humbled but really excited as well. We are the first local contemporary company to achieve this, and perhaps the first of any dance company. Artists have been known to LEAVE Santa Barbara and go on to do AMAZING things (Martha Graham, Alonzo King), but staying in SB and realizing dance dreams is a different matter. As with all of our other programming that breaks ground, we are certain that this will pave the way for other artists in Santa Barbara – by putting our sleepy little sunny city on the map as a place where not only WONDERFUL work from other cities is brought to our town, but WONDERFUL work is made IN OUR TOWN! So grateful for American Dance Abroad’s support as each and every one of the ALMA SAMA Adventurers that have given to making our wild dreams come true.

All ArtBark artists are on target with regards to prepping their material. Cecily and Misa went “off book” last rehearsal by walking through all of their roles without having to resort to video and Mojca and Trina are right on track too! We will be premiering Alma in the black box theater at the Cankarjev Dom reserved for premiering new works, which is a bit smaller than our own Center Stage Theater, and we’re excited to say that the audience will be full of Misa’s relatives – there are around 50 Kolencs in the region where ArtBark will be in residence and cousin Emil said to expect the audience to be full of Kolencs. Cousin Jenny - who looks so much like Misa, will be coming from the seaside town of Koper. So, if you want to go, you should probably get your tickets now. Ha, ha, ha! Gotta love it. There will actually be two peeps flying from the US to take in the show! Trina's fiance and Cecily's boyfriend - then they will stay and travel Europe a bit more.Cecily and Misa very much look forwards to launching the journey by buying each other a beer at the airport (they wagered the origins of the quote – “dancers are the athletes of God” – and decided they both won), Trina is excited that her sister, moving to NYC to attend design school, will help with the final fitting of one of her costumes, Moki is keeping Stephen and Misa on track with tasks they’ve yet to accomplish with regard to video footage, and we just have to say. We are very much looking forwards to realizing this dream we have been working diligently at developing and manifesting for THREE YEARS!
When we toast with the Mayor of Celje, on June 4th, with sparkling twinkles in our eyes, we’ll share all the love in our hearts for each and every one of you with this dignitary and clink the glasses of whatever we are drinking at that moment and send you a great big charge of positivity.
Blessings upon you and yours!
and... a sneak peek... Marijan passed along. Our program is going to be made into a "stripi" (comic book).
