According to his death certificate, Peter was 88 when he died in 1846, which would give us a birth date of 1758. The 1841 census gives his age as 85, which gives us a similar birth date of 1755 (although of course ages were rounded down in 1841). The only local baptism of a Peter Matthews at anything like the right time took place in Hereford in 1865, parents Edward and Mary (presumably the Edward Matthews and Mary Griffiths who got married at St Peter, Hereford, in December 1757). That would put him at the same age as his wife Mary, and of course he might not have been immediately baptised, but 10 years is quite a gap.
