DAVE SHANE
PERSONAL INFO:
NAME: Dave Shane
WWBA TEAM: Midland Militia
YEARS IN WWBA: 37th
HOW OLD ARE YOU? 65
FAMILY MEMBERS: My wife, Lorie, sons Ben and Dan and two grandchildren
LINE OF WORK: Retired newspaper editor, reporter, columnist, started as a sportswriter, ended up in news
HOBBIES: War Games – World in Flames (global strategic WW II), Crusade and Revolution (Spanish Civil War) and The Dark Valley (Russian front in WW II) are my favorites.
Also chess, former adult soccer player, referee and coach, currently replaying the 1967 American League season with APBA.
Favorite Baseball Team: Detroit Tigers, as I grew up with them, discovering them on my own when I was about 8, as no one else in my family liked sports. Learned everything from listening to Ernie Harwell on the radio. There weren’t many TV games back then.
Favorite Player: Al Kaline, Mr. Tiger of course
Favorite Baseball Memory: 1968, when the Tigers won game seven of the World Series, the pinnacle of my childhood. They won 15 walk-off games that year, three short of the MLB record, and then became the third team in history to win the World Series after trailing 3-1.
First MLB Game: July 5, 1969 at Tiger Stadium. I was crushed as the Orioles beat the Tigers, 9-3, as Dave McNally raised his record to 12-0. I was 13 years old.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE WWBA? I saw a notice in a Strat-O-Matic publication saying a good league needed a good manager. I told Jack Luzzi I was serious about getting into a league that will last. He told me they may be switching games, and I said I don’t care as long as the league will be around for a while and I am with serious gamers.
WHAT OTHER LEAGUES DO YOU PLAY IN: none
WHAT YOU LIKE /DISLIKE ABOUT DMB: Games play fast, some of the stats are very accurate, although some are not, easy to send out stats, face to face is pretty amazing.
