Shetland Community Bike Project Sportive

10th Anniversary Celebration - 30 August 2009

At the end of August the Shetland Wheelers Cycle Club assisted with the running of a cycle fun event to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Bike Project.

Riders assembled at the Gilbertson park for an 11am start with the choice of two routes: from the park via the Brig o’ Fitch - Tingwall Valley - Scord - Black Gaet for the longer 14 mile route, or missing out the Tingwall section for a shorter 10 mile route straight through the Black Gaet and then back into town.

After several monthly meetings in the lead up to the event Caroline Adamson from the bike project with the input from the health board and the Wheelers managed to put it altogether. Also at the park Active Schools had set up an enclosed area for the younger children to enjoy some off road biking with stimulating exercises for them to learn good bike skills.

The weather on the day was pleasant and sunny with a moderate south-westerly wind that didn’t really hinder the 13 cyclists that turned out to enjoy the company and the fresh air. Following the bike ride the cyclists were treated to some tasty home bakes and lashings of tea in the Gilbertson Hall, which soon put back the calories used from their efforts of the day.
