Alexander is a story of the comeback kid! And this is saying a lot because Alexander was a Golden Pyrenees. This means he is a Golden Retriever and Great Pyrenees. Alexander was born October 6, 2017 in an abandoned barn outside Kansas City, Kansas. His mom and litter mates were all alone in this world but not for long! After only a few days, Alexander, his mom and siblings were all rescued by a local animal rescue and was fostered by a wonderful family in Johnson County. Alexander was brought to TBI in December 2017. From the beginning Alexander "The Great" lived up to his name. He was high energy but was always too smart for his own good! Alexander did very well in his early training in obedience but as most Pyrenees do, Alexander went through a bit of a rebellious stage and in August of 2018, Alexander was involved in a car accident that caused him to have a fractured tibia. It would take an operation and some rehab therapy but Alexander was back up on his repaired leg and was slowly making a comeback and by December 2018, he was already wanting to work with Gracie on public access outing and was once again mastering his early obedience through the use of positive reinforcement training! For the next 9 months Alexander would complete a very intensive training program that would make him ready for working on the campus of a major university with his handler who has epilepsy. Alexander had to learn to become a co-ed dog on a major college campus! He had to learn public transit, how to navigate academic buildings, the library, sitting in classes for several hours and most importantly to be able to do all of this while making sure to still do his job to assist his handler by detecting seizures and prevent his handler from falling as she wears mobility braces. In January 2023, Alexander after a 2 year fight passed away from hypothyroidism. His name is embedded in the Kansas State University Veterinarian School Library and donation was given in his name from North Topeka Animal Clinic for all the years of service that Alexander gave his handler and the love he gave his veterinarian team.Â
