It all started in Spring of 2016 when it was realized that Gary after serving 20 years in the U.S. Navy and having traumatic brain injury might benefit from having a service dog. At the same time, Gary thought it would be great to have a Great Dane. He knew Ara had adored them from a far and so he purchased Gracie, A mantle Great Dane puppy for Ara. But Ara wanted to gift Gracie back to Gary in a very special way. Ara had spent many years training working dogs for their ranch and working in basic obedience but she was going to take on a brand new challenge. Ara had been reading about how Great Danes made excellent service dogs for those with epilepsy because of their size and ability to block and brace. They also had other attributes that made for great service dogs. So Ara got to work, extending her knowledge on dog training to the world of training service dogs. She also joined a network of experienced Great Dane owners and they supported Ara in her endeavors. Within the year Gracie was truly catching on to all of her training. She was becoming the kind of service dog Gary needed and his seizures seem to be less in frequency as well. By the second year, Gracie was beginning to detect Gary's seizures and even get help when Gary fell ill. It was from this point that Ara and Gary decided to begin their program for other military veterans suffering from traumatic brain injury and epilepsy. They took their program one step further and began relationships in their community and began training young rescue Giant breeds as service dogs and offering these dogs to veterans at little to no cost to the veteran. Today, we have many wounded veterans that are wanting to get involved in our program as handlers of a service dog for their neurological needs. We train each and every dog to the specific needs of the client and we take on each case individually. We work with physicians and mental health professionals to determine the best fit for our clients and their individual needs. We are optimistic for our Future at Seizure Alert and Recovery GIANTS and know that we can help our veterans one dog at a time!
