2017 Project:

Slike Ski-Bike

My dad and I took home a few bikes from the metal pile at the dump.  We also had several old skis in the shed.

First, we had to cut up the old bike with an angle grinder and cutoff wheel.  I really like the grinder.

Next we cut off the old crank and gears and cables and levers.  We arranged the parts to see what shape we would make it.  I sat on a step ladder in place of the old torn up seat.

We found a piece of pipe to put through the frame where the pedals used to go.  We found some aluminum square tube to connect the pipe to the skis.

We had to drill big holes to fit the pipe and allow the skis to turn on the pipe.  We used the Bridgeport milling machine and programmed a circle.  We mounted the aluminum parts to the skis with the old binding screws.

Next we welded the pipe to the frame and cut off the rest of the tubes that used to mount the back wheel.

We used another piece of aluminum to mount the front ski.  A long bolt connects the ski to the shock fork.  I found an old retracting seat belt and attached it as a pull cord.

I found a better seat from one of the other dump bikes.  It's done!  Time for a test.

The seat belt works!  It needs a better handle.

It can go pretty fast.  You have to lean forward to get weight on the front ski or you cant steer.

We cut up a piece of blue plastic for a pull handle.

Heres a video of testing it:
