2013 Project:

Air Rocket Glider

Me my dad and my sister worked on inventing a rocket that turns into a plane after it launches.  We came up with the idea after we had built a plane that is a copy of an old toy.  It was in Make Magazine here:

It looked like this when it was done:

It was launched with a rubber band on a stick.  My dad could launch it well, but my arms weren't long enough.  We looked back to MAKE magazine and found a catapult launcher for the plane.  It looks like this:

Here is the article:

Here my dad and I are ready to launch it for the first time on a snowy Saturday morning in Feb. 2013:

Here is the video from that first launch:

The first time we used the catapult, it ripped the tail right off.  Oops.  If you watch closely, you will see the tail hit my dad!

We wanted to make something stronger, so we combined the idea of the folding wings with a yellow stomp rocket tube, designed it in SolidWorks that same Saturday afternoon. My dad 3D printed the parts that night, and on Sunday morning we made the worlds first Air Rocket Glider:

It goes over the launch tube with the wings folded back like this on our super stomp rocket launcher:

Here is the first launch of the ARG:

We launched it over 20 times, and had to knock it out of lots of trees using snow balls!

We contacted the man who wrote the MAKE magazine articles, Rick Schertle, on the folding wing glider and the catapult launcher.  We didn't know it then, but he had also written an article on a air launcher that was similar to ours!

My dad and Rick wrote an article for MAKE magazine about the ARG:

Over the last year, we have improved the design of the ARG, we made a new smaller launcher, my dad partnered with Rick and started a small business selling the new launcher and ARG's, they did a successful Kickstarter campaign, and they started a small business selling the new launchers and the ARG's.

Here is a picture of me ready to launch one of the ARG's used in the magazine article :

And here is a video of a good flight that day:
