Dr Peter Bussey
(University of Glasgow)
Monday 19th September, 7.30 – 8.45 pm,
The Meeting Place, Holy Trinity Church,
Essex Street NR2 2BJ
In the first decades of the twentieth century, Newtonian physics gave way to quantum physics and radical new ideas about how the Universe exists. Behind the apparent order of the natural world, the behaviour of atoms and atomic particles seems to be controlled by random quantum events, particles can exist in many places at once and information appears to be exchanged at faster than light speeds.
Quantum physics is easily seen as more "mysterious" and less "materialistic" than more familiar Newtonian physics. More freedom for more possibilities seems to be exist when physical quantities can become interconnected, and large-scale "entanglement" between particles can occur.
As we are all made of atoms and molecules what might these new insights mean for the way that our body and our spirit functions? Writers, such as Deepak Chopra, suggest that connections can be made between the insights of quantum physics and questions of the mind and the Spirit. Dr Peter Bussey will discuss whether this way of thinking really does present new avenues for understanding spirituality. Dr Bussey is a Christian and an experimental particle physicist who has recently been involved in the search for the Higgs Boson.
All are welcome to attend this open meeting. No booking is required. There will be a (voluntary) retiring collection to help cover costs.
