Dr Peter J. Bussey

(University of Glasgow)

Dr Bussey is an active researcher in particle physics; he will give an overview of the science of the elementary particles from which all matter is apparently made. The existence of these sub-atomic particles has been deduced by a combination of mathematical theory and experimental observation. Dr Bussey will describe the recent experiments that have enabled us to detect new particles. Much publicity has been given to the Higgs particle, whose existence was predicted by theory but until recently had not been detected experimentally. Because of its fundamental role in particle physics it has been referred to as the "God particle". Is this really a suitable title for it?
